Just Didn't Hold Up At All Feb 01, 2010 I'm a big fan of Melissa and Doug toys for my baby, who is now a toddler. In general, Melissa and Doug makes educational, sturdy toys you can be confident and comfortable in giving your child.
Unfortunately, my experience with the pound-a-peg was not so great. The first unit we bought we had the pegs "lose" their shape and start falling through the holes after just a few plays, and this is when our little one was >1, so not a real heavy-hitter. Melissa and Doug were very responsive and immediately sent us a new one, after a quick phone call to their customer service center (where you actually speak to a live person; kudos!).
Unfortunately, we had the same problem with the second set, and then some. Not only did the pegs lose their pound-ability but the hammer also feel apart, repeatedly.
All in all, I think Melissa and Doug make great products--and I continue to frequent them as a company--but this one just didn't seem to hold up.

Very disappointed Jan 27, 2010 I was expecting an old fashioned wooden pound-a-peg that my grandson could pound with the wooden mallet. This was not it. It is slick and shiny - that's o.k. except there is no resistance for the pegs. They slide almost without being touched. My grandson loved the original wooden one that he could actually hammer. This one can't be hammered, the pegs simply fall thru, except for one that was stuck when I received it and even with hammering it hasn't budged. He and I are very disappointed in the Wooden Poundless-Peg toy.
Fun for those kids that love to pound stuff! Jan 06, 2010 Santa brought this gift for my 2yo. He loves it! Ours seems to be made just fine, no durability issues. My 2yo likes to just what it's made for, pounding the pegs down & flipping it over & doing it again & again. He takes the pegs completely out & rearranges the colors and even tried giving a blue peg to Dad when he was nailing up a wall hanging. Kids are cool!
Mama wishes the pegs were a little harder to pound thru as he can push them through without the hammer. And it could be bigger in size as it is pretty small compaired to others I have seen.
But for less than $10, it is a good choice for a wooden well made toy. If you have an extra $10 to spend($20 total), buy the pound & roll M&D tower. We have both & that one gets much more use plus higher marks from Mama too!
Sucks Jan 04, 2010 I bought this toy as a gift because we have one from Ikea that is loved by the kids. The one from Ikea has plastic pegs with a wooden frame. This one from Melissa & Doug sucks. It has wooden pegs with a wooden frame. The pegs are so loose that they practically fall through. Kids can easily push the pegs through with their hand, so there is no reason for them to bother with the hammer. This defeats its purpose as a motor skill biulding toy. Plus, I paid $14 for it, and it's price is now less than $9. I would not recommend this toy.
Not as good as the old one -- Playskool, maybe? Dec 31, 2009 My kids loved the old pound-a-peg. But this one is narrower, so it's more apt to fall over. One of the pegs is just a bit too small, so it falls out. I was disappointed.
